Calliditas Therapeutics is involved in the development of small molecule-based drugs for inflammatory kidney diseases. Its leading candidate Nefecon is used in inflammatory kidney disease (IgA nephropathy) for the patients at risk of progressing to renal failure. It releases Budesonide, a Glucocorticosteroid, in the lower ileum and ascending colon of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The targeted release of the active ingredient to this region of the GI tract will bypass the systemic side effects of budesonide.
