He designed boots for injured feet, with soft leather and air-padded soles made of tires. In 1959, R. Griggs Group bought patent rights to manufacture the shoes in the UK. In October 2013 Permira, a PE firm acquired R. Griggs Group Limited (the owner of the Dr. Martens brand) for an amount of £300M.
