Abgenix was a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery of fully human therapeutic antibodies for cancer and inflammatory diseases. Its products include Panitumumab, co-developed by Amgen is an IgG2 MAb which targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr), a protein that plays a role in cancer cell signaling. Its other product Denosumab is designed to target RANK Ligand, a protein that acts as the primary signal to promote bone removal. It claims to have potential in the treatment of a broad range of bone loss conditions including osteoporosis, treatment-induced bone loss, bone metastases, multiple myeloma, and rheumatoid arthritis. In December 2005, Amgen acquired Abgenix for around $2.2B.
