KAI pharmaceutical (now a wholly owned subsidiary of Amgen) was a clinical stage company, focusing on the development of treatment on secondary hyperparathyroidism(SHPT). The company's lead molecule, KAI-4169 (Etelcalcetide) is used for the treatment of SHPT in patients with chronic kidney disease who are undergoing dialysis. This is a peptide agonist of the calcium-sensing receptor which affects calcium homeostasis by modulating the release of parathyroid hormone. In 2011, KAI entered into the agreement with Ono Pharmaceutical for production of Etelcalcetide in Japan. Amgen acquired KAI Pharmaceuticals for $315 million in 2012. In February 2017, the FDA approved Etelcalcetide, under a trade name, Parsabiv for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism.
